Certificate in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy
The Certificate program is the foundation of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy as a speciality practice. The expected outcome is a change in clinical behaviour as Physical Therapists gain knowledge in evidence-based patient management and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions using direction-specific exercise and OMPT procedures (mobilization/manipulation). The core of Certification is musculoskeletal differential diagnosis using a combination of selective tissue and movement-based examination. Physical Therapists will learn to appreciate and integrate current Clinical Practice Guidelines for patient care. Certified clinicians will be able to communicate effectively with medical providers as well as educate their patients on prognosis and appropriate medical care.
The C-OMPT program curriculum has been accepted by IFOMPT (International Federation of Manual and Musculoskeletal Physical Therapists) with its Member of Organization, a globally recognized organization that sets the highest standards for orthopedic manual physical therapy. This endorsement ensures that the program aligns with international best practices, evidence-based approaches, and advanced clinical reasoning techniques. By meeting IFOMPT standards, the C-OMPT certification provides physiotherapists with a globally respected qualification, enhancing their expertise in musculoskeletal and manual therapy.
The therapeutic exercise prescription course focuses on the integration of biomechanical theories, neurophysiologic principles, specific tissue tolerance and M.E.T. (medical exercise therapy) principles in the creation and design of rehabilitative therapeutic exercise programs with emphasis on specific dosages. Physical therapists are considered movement experts. This course intends to review biomechanical principles as it applies to human movement, neurophysiologic effects of movement, mechanotherapy processes and effects relative to specific tissues (muscle, tendon, ligaments, capsules, cartilage, bone) including its specific tolerance for movement and MET (medical exercise therapy) and utilization of handheld dynamometry measurements. Such principles will be integrated into designing a specific therapeutic exercise program with appropriate dosage (load, duration, frequency, intensity) particularly for orthopedic-related, sports-related injuries, common post-surgical procedures, and musculoskeletal pathologies
